Squarespace SEO, GEO & AEO: The Complete Guide

Squarespace SEO, GEO and AEO guide

If you have a Squarespace website, getting found online involves more than simply adding a few keywords to your pages.

Squarespace SEO helps your website appear in traditional Google search results. Local SEO helps potential customers find your business in location-based searches. And as search increasingly includes AI-generated answers, GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) and AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) are becoming useful parts of your overall search strategy.

The good news? You don't need to rebuild your Squarespace website from scratch to get started.

In this guide, I'll explain what actually matters, what Squarespace already handles for you, and where a professional Squarespace SEO strategy can make a difference.

What Is Technical SEO?

Technical SEO is the foundation that helps search engines crawl, understand and index your website.

The good news is that Squarespace handles many technical SEO fundamentals automatically. Squarespace generates things such as sitemaps and robots.txt files and provides built-in SEO settings, so you don't need to install a collection of SEO plugins just to get started.

But that doesn't mean your website is automatically optimized.

Your content, page structure and settings still matter.

Here are some of the areas I check when working on Squarespace SEO:

  • SEO titles: Give every important page a clear, descriptive title that explains what the page is about.

  • Meta descriptions: Write a useful description that encourages someone to click from Google.

  • Headings: Use a logical H1, H2 and H3 structure so visitors and search engines can understand the page.

  • URL slugs: Keep URLs short, descriptive and relevant to the page.

  • Image alt text: Describe meaningful images accurately instead of stuffing keywords into every image.

  • Internal links: Connect related pages and blog posts so visitors and search engines can discover more of your content.

  • Google Search Console: Use it to monitor indexing, search queries and how your website performs in Google.

Google specifically recommends using words people would actually search for in prominent areas such as titles, main headings, alt text and link text.

For example, if you are a real estate agent in Toronto, a page titled "Toronto Real Estate Agent | Residential Property Specialist" is much more descriptive than simply calling the page "Services."

And if you're looking for more practical optimization ideas, my guide on Squarespace SEO Tips to Improve Your Rankings in 2026 goes deeper into the basics.

What Is Local SEO?

Local SEO helps your business appear when people search for services in a specific location.

Think about searches such as:

  • Squarespace web designer in Toronto

  • real estate agent near me

  • church website designer in New York

  • dentist in Chicago

For a local business, ranking for the right location can be much more valuable than attracting completely unrelated traffic from around the world.

Your Squarespace website should clearly communicate:

What you do + who you help + where you serve.

That information should be consistent across your website and important business profiles, including your Google Business Profile.

You can also create dedicated service or location pages when they genuinely provide useful information. Don't create dozens of almost-identical city pages simply to target different locations.

For example, if you serve Toronto, Mississauga and Oakville, each page should contain genuinely useful information about serving customers in that area, not just a city name swapped into the same paragraph.

Local SEO is also closely connected to your overall website strategy. A beautifully designed website won't generate many local leads if Google and potential customers can't clearly understand what your business does.

What Is GEO?

GEO stands for Generative Engine Optimization.

Instead of thinking only about ranking a blue link on Google, GEO focuses on making your business easier for AI-powered search systems to understand, describe and potentially reference.

Today, AI-powered search experiences include tools such as Google's AI Overviews, Bing Copilot and Perplexity. Squarespace itself now provides guidance specifically around optimizing websites for AI-powered search.

But here's something important: GEO isn't about finding a secret keyword that makes ChatGPT recommend your business.

AI systems need reliable information to understand who you are, what you offer and why your business is relevant.

That means your website should have:

  • Clear descriptions of your services

  • Consistent business information

  • Helpful, original content

  • Well-structured pages

  • Relevant internal links

  • Accurate structured data where appropriate

  • Strong supporting signals from reputable websites and business profiles

Google's current guidance also emphasizes that AI search still relies on the fundamentals of good SEO: useful original content, crawlable pages, good page experience and accurate structured data.

So if someone tells you that GEO means completely abandoning traditional SEO, be skeptical. Good Squarespace SEO is still the foundation.

What Is AEO?

AEO stands for Answer Engine Optimization.

The goal is simple: structure your content so that it can clearly answer the questions people ask search engines and AI tools.

For example, instead of writing: "Our pricing depends on several different factors."

A stronger answer would be: "A professional Squarespace website can cost anywhere from a few hundred dollars for a simple setup to several thousand dollars for a custom business website, depending on the scope."

The second answer is clearer, more useful and easier to understand.

For AEO, I recommend:

  • Answering important questions directly

  • Using descriptive H2 and H3 headings

  • Keeping important answers near the beginning of a section

  • Using bullet points and tables where they improve readability

  • Supporting claims with real examples or numbers when available

  • Creating useful FAQ sections for genuine customer questions

However, don't add FAQs simply because someone told you that FAQ schema guarantees AI visibility.

Google's current documentation emphasizes helpful content and accurate structured data rather than a particular "AI ranking trick."

How SEO, GEO & AEO Work Together

These four approaches support different parts of how people discover your business online. They work best together rather than as completely separate strategies.

Optimization Comparison Table
Optimization Main Goal Who/What It Helps What You Should Do
SEO Improve your visibility in traditional search results Google and other search engines Optimize page titles, headings, content, URLs, images and internal links
Local SEO Help people find your business in a specific location People searching for local services Optimize your location information, Google Business Profile and relevant local pages
GEO Help AI systems understand your business and online presence AI-powered search and generative engines Keep your business information consistent, publish useful content and build trustworthy online mentions
AEO Provide clear answers to specific questions Search engines and AI answer systems Answer common questions directly, use descriptive headings, FAQs, lists and clear explanations

And there's one thing business owners shouldn't forget: getting traffic is only part of the job. Your website still needs to convince visitors to trust you, understand your offer and take the next step.

That's why SEO should support your website, not dictate the entire website experience.
